RAS Connection only work every other time....

Aug 2, 2007 2:30AM PDT

I use Windows RAS connections to connect to servers via IP. Recently, they have "stopped working" the first time I connect, then every other time after that.

The modem connects, I can log in just fine, it assigns me an IP address, but I can't ping the server. If I hang up and do it again, I can then ping the server. If I hang up and do it a 3rd time, it doesn't work. 4th time it does, etc, etc...

I have dozens of servers I connect to and they all do this and it didn't do it a few weeks ago, so I know it's not the equipment. I have XP Pro verson 2002 Service Pack 2 and I'm current on all Microsoft updates. I have automatic updates setup and I do recall that my computer had reset (which means it did an update) a few days before I noticed the problem. I know Microsoft has had RAS issues in the past, does anyone know if this is a new one?

Try something like the usual.

Look up WINSOCKFIX which has helped with this in the past.

I tried that....sort of

I used the Windows built-in one 'netsh winsock reset'. That didn't help.

Happy, but annoyed...

Well, that worked. So, it's good it's fixed. I'm annoyed though, because I read on several other website that if I had SP2, I should use the one that was built in and to NOT use WinsockFix. Should have just done it I guess. Just goes to show you can't believe everything you read on the Internet. Wink

Thanks!

I (sorta) agree.

Try the builtin first. But winsockfix pushes the registry settings back to "normal" (?)

There are many reasons I come across this but the number one reason is malware. When you have time, try this free online scan -> http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

BOB do you think that would fix this?
Aug 2, 2007 8:22AM PDT

Hi Bob, My son connects by wifi (netgear usb adaptor) for the last month or so he has trouble getting connected we just dont get a signal until after a few restarts etc. Takes about half hour to get connection but once he has it, it is perfect doesnt drop out or anything. We have tried just about everything even replacing the usb. Think WINSOCKFIX could help? He has xp-home sp2.

Tell me a little more.

The most common reason I see wifi connect failures is that SSID broadcast was disabled. While well meaning (advice) some drivers fail with this turned off.

My advice today is to enable SSID (please use some name other than LINKSYS) and move to WPA asap.
