Rant: CNET Videos are *****S****L****O****W******

Jul 26, 2006 3:48PM PDT

I am getting sick and tired of watching CNET videos and waiting for the videos to constantly buffer and when I do finish watching a video the same thing happens if I watch it again. Are they trying to copyright protect their videos by not allowing it to be stored on temporary internet files in the browser?

For example I watch the Buzz Report on CNET TV or the normal video on CNET I see the about 5 or 6 seconds of the video then it stops and buffers for 8 seconds then comes another 5 or 6 seconds of video the same things happens 8 second stop for buffering, it doesn't happen with the podcasts but it does with the videos. I think CNET is using the wrong player for playing videos.

I?m on 256 KB connection and I asked to get higher speed but I was told no. So I am pleading with the people in charge of the site to allow some kind of caching or something.

If you have the same problem add to this forum.

Thanks

Ok I will but has anyone actually ever complained before about this?

Yes...

There have been a few complaints about it before from people using dial-up or low speed broadband connections. It would be nice if they gave you an option to let the entire video be downloaded as a temp file before you begin playing, that way you could watch it without having to stop and wait for more to download. (You might want to mention that in your complaint.)

Best of luck.

I've been away for a couple days so I haven't had the chance to complain but anyway it is a pity that most people dont have high speed connections maybe that what CNET should acknowledge maybe they should do a poll and see how many people do have a high speed connection but unfortunately for me I have to stick with a sluggish speed that I have.

I get back to you as soon as I find out if they fixed the problem.

One question do you have a high speed connection?

I have high-speed cable...

I have a 6Mbps (supposedly upgraded to 8Mbps) cable connection at home, so I can watch high-quality streaming video full-screen most of the time without a problem. (CNN, Fox News, NFL Network, etc)

In regards to having a poll on the topic, Cnet actually did in April. The result showed that 72% had broadband, 12% dial-up, and 26% other. You can click here for a listing of old community polls (that one is about 1/5 of the way down) and here for the related discussion/comments.
