Rant about Beta

Feb 27, 2006 1:36PM PST

Okay I am sick of logging on the web and using all these cool new web features with the word "BETA" painted all over the screen.

You're either done with the site, or you're not...geez.

Sorry for that rant. Was nice to get it out of my system finally.

Google is the worst! Google news Beta??

But it seems that companies are using peoples desire to be the first to use a product as a method of getting them into the brand by using public betas.

It was Google and GMAIL that really annoyed me, a limited beta with invitations, so after a few days, you could invite five of your friends.

Now, you have to join waiting lists to join Google betas. It?s just a pain.

Even Microsoft are at it with Windows Live Messenger (MSN Messenger for but the new times that we live in). People will buy invites on eBay, it?s insane.

Beta should be restricted to in-house and friends of in-house testers.

Like beta is meant to be a time where the testers (or users) report bugs, well, where do I do that for MSN?

(Anyway, if anyone really wants an invite to the next version of MSN Messenger, just ask Happy )

I'm tired of seeing the word "BETA" slapped everywhere as well.

True that

True that scott.

The company I work for was discussing a little while ago about how to launch our new dev. tool and my boss summed the whole beta thing up perfectly:

''if somebody tells us saying 'hey thats wrong!' we can just point to the beta sign in the corner.''
