ransomware

Aug 26, 2016 11:07AM PDT

I attempted to go to youtube.com and got hit with what appeared to be ransomware. I could not close it so I immediately powered off my computer. Then I disconnected my external usb drive that is my data drive. Then I started up in safe mode and attempted to run the Norton scan. It stayed in initialize mode forever and never showed any scan progress. After several failed attempts I started up in normal mode. I seem to be operational. I am currently running the full system scan.If that's successful I will reconnect my usb drive and scan it.

Any comments? Similar situations?

This sounds more like a Norton support issue.

AFAIK, Norton doesn't work in safe mode.

HOWEVER, Grif's list at http://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/how-to-remove-pup-option-603542/#post-f742c795-5881-433b-a29b-6d758efe5cd3 and the scans there often work in safe mode.

-> I do see a lot of folk over react to fake web sites. Some PC Windows users do not know how to close an uncloseable item. I use task manager if the bad thing/site locked up my browser.

AND ANOTHER HOWEVER. I find that what I use to be just great. I don't use IE, Edge but Firefox with 2 add ons. These are Web Of Trust and Ublock Origin.

do a system restore
Aug 26, 2016 11:22AM PDT

never heard of anyone getting ransonware from youtube. However, do a system restore to a restore point prior to the possible attack. also download and run malwarebybes. you should run nortons in normal mode.

Dealing with Ransomware

Similar happened to me. Used Task Manager (which I always have running & accessible in task bar) to shut down computer. Restarted and ran Rogue Killer, which found 2 trojans, & for good measure restarted and ran Bitdefender ISO, which found incidental PUPs.
