Ransomware? Pray tell!

by chamaecyparis / December 6, 2010 9:56 AM PST

In an active forum discussion, ERROR MESSAGES, R. Proffitt made posters aware of something of which I had been unaware of -- ransomware. Specifically, he referred to the site http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/ransomware

Thank you for alerting me and others to such a phenomenon, R.Proffitt! I must say it appears to be specific to Windows Operating Systems. Call me naive, but I have not been involved with MS since 2003. After a hiatus from the IT world, I delved into the world of Linux and became "pane-free" (yes, it is a double entendre). I have not regretted it.

All I can say is this is yet another reason to become so as much as is practicable!

Please tell us of your experiences with ransomware, when and how it occurred and what OS you were using at the time of infection. Also, what was necessary to get rid of it on your system.

The Samsung RF23M8090SG

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
