Random Stop Errors!!!

Aug 20, 2007 3:56PM PDT

alright. my computer has been having trouble for awhile now and i've tried everything that i could think of. at random points of operation, i'll get stop errors. i changed the windows setting so i can see the error message and the hex code corresponding to each one. sometimes it's nv4_disp.dll, sometimes it's win32k.sys, sometimes it's pagefile problems, or pool data, or NTFS errors. i get a lot of program errors as well. playing music. installing programs. clicking the start menu, anything will give it an error, but it's so unpredictable it's really hard to be able to test all possibilities. i tried everything, except reinstalling windows... did that, but didn't help. i still get 'em. i've run memtest86 on every stick of ram i'm using, individually in every configuration on the board possible, and together as well. the first time i ran it, i got two errors, but strangely enough, when i ran them individually and then together again, there are no errors. and that's letting it run around 25 passes for each stick in each configuration. i've tried different video cards. i got a new power supply. i feel like i'm at the end of my rope here. and i don't want to take it in to a shop 'cause they'll know no more than i do, and charge me to tell me they don't know what to do.

Are your drivers updated?

Even reinstalling windows there could be an infection, such as virus, etc.

Have you run any scans?

Tom

yes. right after i reinstalled windows, i updated every driver on my system and checked for BIOS updates, which there weren't any new ones since the version i have.

before i reinstalled windows, i ran a boot virus scan with Avast and it found two viruses and cleaned them. but after that, i reinstalled windows, and right away, reinstalled avast and ran it again... nothing.

Besides the fine advice so far, that CPU and system is known to toss random errors when some component (not just the CPU) gets a little too warm or if there is a memory error. To narrow it down the first thing I do is remove the case cover. If it's dusty we vacuum it out and blow the heatsink clean and try it without the cover.

I have to share I ran into yet another home built with no heatsink compound and another that they had removed the heatsink but elected not to freshen up the compound. Both were plagued with random stops as well as IRQL errors.
