Question

Random PC Freezing After BIOS Update

Dec 31, 2014 7:00AM PST

Just yesterday, I updated the BIOS on my Gigabyte motherboard, model is GA-X79-UP4. The update itself was a success, however, 3 times in less than 24 hours, my pc has frozen up on me.

I think it should be noted that this happened 2 times while opening and exiting a game client. The third time was when I was looking at my boot advanced options.

Anyway, I'm under the impression that this is a problem with Windows, due to the BIOS Flash, which may possibly require a clean install to remedy.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why my pc is freezing up like this?

Yes..

But, mostly in games, which led me to believe it was specifically a GPU problem. After the BIOS flash, 2 freezes were still game related, though I had a freeze while browsing through general Windows stuff.

Have you done any maintenance ?

Like opening the case and blowing out the dirt and fuzz balls, replacing the thermal paste on CPU and GPU ?
It could be heat related

unless the bios update had something in it you needed, you NEVER update a bios just because one is available. why did you update? was there already a problem? You should never have to do a clean install because of a bios update. What does the event viewer say?

Event logs

I'm honestly not sure what to look for in those logs. Though in the application logs, I got an error that was an "Event 1008, Perflib," if that means anything.

One thing I can say is that I've had issues with my Graphics Card ever since I got this PC. It would frequently freeze my pc, or crash my games to the desktop. So I wonder if it's the GPU, not the Bios Update, which caused these issues. It could be coincidental given that I flashed the day before, so I assumed it was related to that. I haven't had any issues since the time of the post. Hope this is just a false alarm.

As for why I flashed, I'm preparing to make some hardware upgrades, though not the CPU, so it probably wasn't necessary. I admit I was curious in how it would turn out, as I've never flashed before. That, and with the money I'm prepared to spend on upgrades, I could very well just wait a little longer and get a new pc if the flash backfired on me. Unwise? Yes. LOL.
