Resolved Question

ram upgrade form 1gb to 2.5 on dell inspiron 6400

Nov 16, 2011 4:46AM PST

Hi guys,
First timer on here. Hope I can put something back into the forum in the future to repay the debt! Q: upgraded dell inspiron 6400 ram from 1GB to 2.5 as the freaker wouldn't go above the Dell home screen!! It ain't mine, doin this for a friend. It recognises the upgrade but inevitably there's a message (aint there always??) .... sys mem changed, if you did not change your mem.... try reseating! Tried all which ways and can't get past. Any ideas would be most welcome and obviously, I would be most grateful. As they say:- A friend in need.... is a pain in the ***!!!

Re: RAM

The memory finder at crucial.com says for a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop:

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 2GB

Slots: 2

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

Can you explain how you make 2.5 GB out of 2 slots that each have an 1GB maximum? If I were the BIOS I would object. And it seems Dell's BIOS does the same.

Hi Kees,
Thanks for the response my man. Embarrassed to say that I didn't realise it was limited to 2GB. bought a PNY DDR2 800 PC2 6400 - and removed one of the 512 cards and replaced it with the 2GBcard. Hence the 2.5 result. Anything I can do here?
