Resolved Question

RAM upgrade Dell Optiplex GX280

Feb 18, 2012 8:26AM PST
I have an optiplex that I am refurbishing for my granddaugher. Originally I planned to upgrade to 4GB RAM and then I found out that my 32bit OS will only support 3GB. I have another Dell with 4GB of Ram installed though only 3GB is beeing used. My problem is trying to get the right configuration for the RAM in my granddaughters. The board has 2 memory receptacles. A white tab and black tab in the first socket and a white tab and black tab in the second socket.
From what I can tell the first socket shows the white as (1) and the black is (3), the second socket white is (2) and black is (4) . It boots up fine if I install only 2GB in (2) and (4) but I have tried numbers of different configurations trying to get the 3rd GB installeld. No matter which socket I install it in, I get beeps when I turn the PC on or a racing fan. Could someone help me ?

Corair RAM from Dell website

Thanks for answering/ I bought the RAM from Dell to be sure it was compatible with my Dell OPtiplex. Brand name is Corsair. Their instructions are poor; their picktre has sockets with all white retention levers and shows only three instead of four. As I said before, I other Dell is sitting with 4GB while only using three GB, so I need to know how to configure three GB sticks into the four sockets.
