From the page

Dual Channel memory architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
*Hyper DIMM support is subject to the physical characteristics of individual CPUs. Some hyper DIMMs only support one DIMM per channel. Please refer to Memory QVL for details.
** To reach DDR3 2200 MHz, you are required to use with Intel Core i7/Core i5 CPU without iGPU and install a discrete graphics card. When using Intel Core i5/Core i3/ Pentium CPU with iGPU, the maximum memory speed supported is 1600+ MHz
***Refer to www.asus.com or this user manual for the Memory QVL(Qualified Vendors Lists).

I'm thinking this is an older board and wondering how long you've had it or if you'd made some recent changes. It's always good to check the manufacturer's web site for information about RAM that's been qualified as well.

4 x 4 would have worked but not 2 x 8.
