Question

RAM compatability

Mar 17, 2018 4:09AM PDT

Hello everybody,

A friend recently sent me his old computer for my girlfriend so she could join in gaming with us. Everything was working fine with the lower end games etc until we tried something a bit higher spec so I looked into it a little. The computer is showing 8.00gb RAM installed but only 3.99 useable. The motherboard is a h57ham2 and has two 2gb sticks and a 4gb currently with the 4gb not being the useable one for whatever reason.

My question (and I'm sorry for the lengthy post) is with this motherboard, is the 4gb stick (a kingston 4gb 2rx8 pc3 10600u) compatable as I honestly have no idea when it comes to this. If not could anybody point me in the right direction for one that can get her up to 8gb total from her current 4?

Any help is greatly appreciated this is driving us mad.

Jerran

What OS is installed. A 32-bit OS can't address more than 4 GB.

Having a non-symmetrical array of sticks makes the PC slower, moreover, if it has a 64-bit OS.

Thanks for your reply. OS is windows 10 64 bit. Originally he had 4 of the same 2gb sticks installed but a ram port burnt out and the repair place just swapped one of them for a 4gb stick to get him up and running again.

I read something on a different forum and gave it a try. Swapped the 4gb and one of the 2gb sticks around now windows is allowing all 8gb to be used.
