Ram ?

Nov 10, 2005 4:29AM PST

I was looking at getting some new ram and I see the DDR and the ddr2 ram - was wondering which was the fastest ram - I have a amd64 3000 / 939 / MSI neo4 motherboard - can either work in that setup. Thanks for any info - use the computer for games mostly

or any of the AMD 64 bit CPU's can use DDR 2.

The reason is that in a billiant and great move at the time, they put the MCH [memory controller hub] inside the CPU chip. Now that people are going to DDR 2, AMD will have to create new CPU's. That isn't planned until mid 06 and then will require a new mobo.

But be sure to use Dual Channel mode for memory to get best performance [buy pairs of memory].

NO DDR2

sadly, most AMD motherboards do not support DDR2 ram. DDR2 have speed buses of 533 and 667, and improvement to the fastest DDR of 400 (PC 3200).

You're in luck...and I don't own stock in Newegg or Corsair...1 GB of DDR 400 (PC3200) 2 DIMMs @ 512MBs each for $73.80. Good stuff... I've put 5-6 GBs of this ram into several AMD systems.
