Question

raid controller how

Dec 12, 2011 4:48PM PST

I bought a SYBA SY-PCI40010 PCI SATA II (3.0Gb/s) 4 Port RAID 0/1/5/10 JBOD Card.
my mother board is asus P8H61-M LE/CSM, and i dont think it has raid support built into the board itself. got vista 64 bit
im new to raid controllers and what ive read is confusing and it seems that raid controllers seem to daisy chain hardrives and uses them as one???

what i wanted was to be able to boot up another harddrive like when i use my other hardrives attached to my board sata ports and using the asus bios boot to boot up which harddrive i wanted to use.
can i do that with this SYBA SY-PCI40010 PCI SATA II (3.0Gb/s) 4 Port RAID 0/1/5/10 JBOD Card or do i need another tyoe card??
all my sata ports are used up and wanted to add a controller card so i could add another harddrive maybe more hardrives and be able to boot up on them, hard drives that already have operating systems on them?? something instead of opening up my machine and switching cables and power supplies to hard drive to use the one i need or want to use?
if this is the correct card type to use then ill be asking how to do that?

so....

I want to boot into an OS that is in a hard drive on a RAID card or a non RAID card if possible. Do I need a card with raid capability to boot up and have those extra sata ports or can I accomplish the same thing with a SATA card without RAID capability? From what i read, Raid cards seem to make one larger drive out of two or more hard drives in a daisy chain. I dont really need to add several drives to make one larger drive. I just want to have separate drives recognized and be able for each to boot up itself, is there a card for that? To me Raid seems to MAKE it more complicated than I need but if thats the only way I'll go with the Raid card.

Again, and I'll be repeating this so I won't.

To boot from sata ports on a card requires code on that card. I've shown an economical card and since it doesn't seem to make sense to you I think it's time for other members to explain it to you.

Did you figure out the boot issue?
Dec 15, 2011 3:25AM PST

If so we can progress to drives on such cards. So far, all the hardware raid cards I've used will allow you to use ONE drive to boot from and run from. No issues on the cards I've used. HOWEVER all those cards are out of date so I will not share those models here. You can't buy them.,

Try the one or similar to the one I linked to.

And no JBOD is not what you asked for.
