The red IDE is the only one you can use for raid, however, if you have any SATA hard drives you can also cofigure them in a raid array, using the red SATA connectors. I think ASUS motherboards require you to load the RAID drivers during your OS instalation! You will also need to enable the promis Raid in the BIOS! If you want to use 2 chanel Raid you will need a controller card! A good one can be expensive, and a cheep one can hose your system! I think Raid can be very unstable! I've gone to using 2 western digital Raptor SATA 150 hard drives (5.3ms seek time, 10k rpm's)!
Good afternoon everyone, I need a little help in understanding what each piece on my motherboard correspondes to what.
I have:
Asus a8v Deluxe motherboard
AMD64 3000+
2 sticks 512 MB RAM (one @ 2700, one @3200)
3 Hard drives (1x 80GB, 2x 40GB)
2 CD-ROM drives
Now here is what i would like to do:
I would like to RAID the two 40GB IDE harddrives together with the a8v Deluxe motherboard. However, the RED IDE controller on the motherboard has to be used since i have so many IDE devices. Basically i need to know if there is a RAID controller in the top IDE controllers (the blue and black IDE controllers on the motherboard) Because if there is then i would like to RAID those two harddrives together on the blue and black IDE raid controllers. (hence using two IDE controllers = speed increase with hard drives raided together).
Red - 80 GB Harddrive
Blue - 40 GB harddrive + CD-ROM(raided with HD on Black IDE controller)
Black - 40 GB harddrive + CD-ROM(raided with HD on Blue IDE controller)
Now if this stands not be true:
Then do i connect the two 40GB IDE harddrives up to the RED IDE controller on the motherboard and lose speed performance increase?
Lastly:
I need to know which Controllers on my motherboard corresponde to what.
-SATA378 TX2(plus)
Promise Fasttrak 378 controller
- Southbridge VIA controller
Good Picture of motherboard can be found at the top of this page:

I'm really not certain what these controllers thing means, but i'd really like some help understanding what they do mean.
