RAID 1 (Mirroring) Configuration Help

Nov 7, 2006 7:41AM PST

Hello!

We are building a server with two 400Gb hard drives in a RAID 1 (Mirroring) configuration. The motherboard is a MSI K9N Neo.

I'm very confused regarding which port/channel to plug the drives in. I want to ensure the best performance for my RAID 1 yet not do anything that would inhibit future expandability.

So, anyway, on the motherboard I have ports labeled "SATA 1 (Primary on 1st channel)" and "SATA 2(Secondary on 1st channel)" which are members of the first channel. Then, I have the ports labeled "SATA 3(Primary on 2st channel)" and "SATA 4(Secondary on 2nd channel)" which are members of the second channel.

Would plugging my two 400Gb drives into SATA 1 and SATA 2 for a mirroring array give the same performance as plugging into SATA 1 and SATA 3?

This is all very confusing and I do have a habit of overcomplicating things. I just want to protect myself just in case we need to add a couple more drives for a RAID 0+1 configuration.

This is a Windows Server 2003 machine that will be in a school.

Thank you very much for all your help!

We're working hard. Happy

-Dustin
