Question

raid 0 Ntfs Bootcamp external WD passport pro setup

Jan 24, 2015 10:02PM PST

Hello everyone,

I am a newby on mac and i was wondering what my options are. I need win7 for solidworks and abacus and i just got a Wd passport pro 2tb for my newyear.

What i aim to do: raid 0 ntfs startup disk of 250gb(2x125GB) for windows 7.

How: first partition the 2 separate disk's to 2x500gb mac journal. Then make them a raid 0 pair in disk utility.(1TB)

Third and difficult part for me: Can i use software to make a recognizable raid 0 ntfs inside the mac OS? (yosemite)

Or can i make a raid 0 ntfs array using windows 7 os. And is there software to make it recognisable inside the Mac OS?

Because then (if it is possible) i can use winclone to restore the bootcamp partition to the external drive (raid 0 ntfs)
These thunderbolts are bootable from startup because apple recognizes them as an internal drive at startup.(source CNET)

If it is possible i would hopefully end up with an external raid 0 bootable Windows 7 and a large Raid 0 external storage area for the mac in one portable enclosure.

The 750gb i haven't adressed would be for time machine on one disk 400gb and windows back upon disk2 350gb(opposite disk of the win OS).

Can anybody help me find this software or am i missing something else? Feel free to reply even if you think this is not the way to go.
Thanks already for the reply,

Happy newyear to everyone here from France.

Thanks for the respons,

I'll be looking in the crossover option.
That would make everything a lot easier.
For the moment i have a working bootcamp windows7 with my programs but the internal drive is getting full.

I would like to avoid the virtual software because i use solidworks quite heavy and especially abacus and they need to have a lot of ram. Bootcamp gives me the full potential of the macbook pro.

The reason that i'm thinking about the difficult option is that i have set up a buffalo mini thunderbolth ssd with a friend.(he did the most)
And it worked by formating to ntfs in windows en restoring the winclone copy of bootcamp to that external disk. He used this method http://dadhacks.dadpower.net/post/47998058347/set-up-bootcamp-on-an-external-thunderbolt-drive.

Now i wanted a lot more space and the closest to the speed of an ssd by using the raid0 of the wd passport pro.(without paying the $$$)
That's why i was looking for a program or utility for macbook that could recognize the external raid0 NTFS.
I know it was a long shot. (And a difficult one)
But this would do wonders (especially in the future if the hd's are switched to ssd's).

Thanks verry much for the reply's Kees_B and mrmacfixit.
