You are in a good position to get some interesting shots.

Before I can answer your question, I need to know the lighting conditions.

Are we talking about a daytime race or a nigh-time race under artificial lighting?

its a very good postion and its good lighting i would say its night time racing but i no the guys they pay dont use flash or anything so i would say its really good lighting the one track is 3/8 mile and we are dead center and the other is 1/2mile sitting in the dead cent on the track

If the professionals are shooting without flash, you have a chance too.
Your shots may have a bit more grain than theirs. It just depends upon what camera they are using.

If you need a zoom lens, take a look at the Canon SX130IS.

Just remember, for best results you need to turn-off the flash if the target is more than 12 feet from the camera.

i no the one guy out there uses the nikon d60 and his photos always turn out really good but hes only like 50 feet from the track ill be a little bit further then that prob closer to 200ft give or take the only part im most worried about is the high speeds of the cars

The Nikon D60 is a DSLR camera.
DSLR cameras have a very large sensor.
The larger pixels on the large sensor assembly produce more light.
It will work better in low light conditions than any point-and-shoot camera.

So there is no guarantee that the Canon SX130IS will work in the conditions you state. And you are likely to get a lot of noise due to low light.

The high speed of the cars means that you need a fast shutter speed.
The SX130IS has a fast enough shutter speed.
But a high shutter speed means you need even more light.

Before buying a camera, I suggest you borrow a camera and see if it will work OK in the lighting conditions you have.
