Question

R6400 Netgear Resets Itself

by barnett83 / January 7, 2018 1:49 PM PST

Hi all

I'm new here but I've searched this extensively and can't seem to find anything that matches my problem.

My R6400 resets on it's own.

My setup is non-fibre, and so I have a Sky SR102 with wifi turned off and no DHCP. I have the R6400 connected via this.

I have changed plugs, and changed the AC power supply and so I am happy this is not the route of the problem.

The R6400 only seems to reset when both myself and my girlfriend are in the house so it's possibly related to the number of devices. Moreover, when we turn off wifi on phones and laptops and limit it to just the Sky box and PS4 it generally reduces the number of resets, further backing my number of devices theory.

My other theory, which relates to number of devices is that I have QoS turned on (as I'm a gamer). Our internet is pretty poor with a max of 600kbs upload on a good day. QoS I have set to 400kbs, but if I reduce this when I run speed test on my laptop I literally get 0.00 upload, and if I increase it my PS4 starts lagging, BUT it does again seem to help reduce the number of resets.

I am at a loss to be honest as I don't see why these would cause a router to reset, or if it's just coincidence. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Is the firmware current?
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / January 7, 2018 8:21 PM PST

Why I ask is that many routers suffered from bugs like this. I don't agree it's number of devices as well, I've seen this and it's either defective or bad firmware.

I take it that the router has all stock settings. If it falters like this, it's defective. It won't matter if it's hardware or firmware here.

Last shot before getting a good router? Go see if OpenWRT or such is available.

It's another firmware for many routers.

If the router maker's firmware has issues and no sign they can correct them then I have an alternative. As to what OpenWRT is, how to use, install, setup, that's on their sites.
