Quieting Modem

Feb 6, 2005 5:07AM PST

I know this has been asked many times before but I could not locate a discussion on it. I have disabled the modem speaker, and turned the speaker volume slider to OFF. Neither of these have silenced the dialing sound, or that annoying modem screech. Where is the other setting located?....I know it's there somewhere.

An old "Hayes" command as I recall

It's done in the init string (initialization string) and I believe its L0 (the letter "L" + number 0 or zero). Valid numbers are 0 thru 3 usually and L is for "loudness". Depending on your OS, there should be an option to add commands to the default string. It may be that your modem needs to be recognized exactly to make this work.

jdorisco, Below are the init strings regarding the modem speaker.

M0 Speaker always off
M1 Speaker on during connection
M2 Speaker always on (very noisy)
L0 Lowest volume
L1 Lowest volume (redundant)
L2 Medium volume
L3 Maximum volume

You would go into your Control Panel, double click on the Phone & Modems icon, hilite your modem, click the Properties button and under the Advanced tab in the Extra Settings window type M0 (that's a capital M and a Zero)

the modem speakers through your network connections. Go to the control panel then network connections. Right click on the connection you use then left click on properties. You should see them modem name and under it configure. Click on configure and uncheck "enable modem speakers". Be sure ot click on OK before you exit. Then the next time you connect to the internet, it will be quiet.

Quieting Modem

On this machine I found the vol control slider in control panel/modem to have no effect.

There is another slider in mycomp/dun/prop that got the racket down to some thing I could live with.

Thanks to all for the suggestions

I silenced the modem by deleting the letters AT&F in the "Extra Initialization Commands" area of Modem properties. My ISP had me recently insert the AT&F command to try to cure a disconnect problem I was having. (The disconnect problem was cured only after I uninstalled my Zonealarm firewall. Merely disabling Zonealarm wouldn't do it.) Thanks againHappy

I'm not sure it's a good idea to turn off the modem sound.

You get used to the sound your modem makes when it is calling your ISP, and this can be useful if you (somehow) get a rogue dialer program installed.

These rogue dialers are insiduous and nasty things. They can change your Dial-Up Network (DUN) settings to dial a premium rate or international number, and they will disconnect you and re-dial the new number.

Many users have been caught out because they didn't notice that they had been re-connected to a different ISP, and their phone bills soared.

There are many ways to prevent this happening, but one of the easiest is to "listen" to the modem sound.

If it sounds different to normal, "disconect" imeediately and start investigating.
