Double click the file and if it is a format that QuicktTime can handle, it will launch automatically.

For DVD movies, just put the DVD into the DVD player and the DVD player software will automatically launch.

Are you having a problem with any particular Video/movie?

Gettings DVDs to play
Apr 20, 2007 6:04AM PDT

In addition to the suggestions by mrmacfixit, if a DVD doesn't automatically launch the application called "DVD Player" when a disc is inserted, go to System Preferences (it's always visible in the Dock) and once open, click on "CDs and DVDs". A window opens that allows you to choose what to do when a disc is inserted. Generally when a DVD is inserted, you'd want to choose "Open DVD Player", and you can choose this by selecting "Choose Another Application" and clicking your way to "DVD Player", which is located in the Application folder.

Something similar happens to me on Windows XP.

It happens on ,for example, Apple's website when I try to open the WWDC stream or something similar. It says download quicktime on the side so I click on it, download, install, restart and then when I press the streams button, a Quicktime window opens and it just stops.

Any suggestions?

Your original post is a little confusing

You asked about getting "any Quicktime or video/movie player" to work. Please take us through the steps you do when trying to play a QT movie. And, is the "video/movie player" you can't get to work the Quicktime Player, or can't you get a DVD to play when inserted. But, please take us through what you are doing where you can't get a QT movie to play. Is the QT movie something on the internet? If so, are you sure it's a QT file? If you are trying to play a Windows Media Video file, QT will attempt to play it, but it can't unless you download Flip4Mac (as mrmacfixit suggested). QT will open but only give you a question mark or something similar. What Flip4Mac does is wrap a Windows Movie file in a Quicktime package so QT can play it. It is one of the most essential programs to have on a Mac. If you can't play a real QT file, then we need to know exactly the steps you are using, because this shouldn't be happening.

Please give a bit more information...
May 1, 2007 3:28AM PDT

Please give us the step-by-step process that you are doing when trying to play the video file. If you are trying to play something on a website, please provide the URL so we can log on and try it. One thing to see if your QT is running: Log on to the Apple website (www.apple.com) and click on the Quicktime tab, then click on Movie Trailers. If your QT is installed correctly and you have the current version (7.1 I think), you should be able to play any of the zillion trailers posted there for viewing. Can you view any of these trailers? If you are trying to view video posted on a specific website, it may be the format of movies posted that is giving the problem.

What you are indicating is a QuickTime that is not correctly installed.
When you went to the Apple Web site and trailers, the trailer should have played if QT was installed correctly.
How about going to the Apple site and downloading a copy of QuickTime again, it should be version 7.1.5, installing it and then going to the trailer site again.

Flip4Mac deals with Windows Media files, WMV, and will only work if QT is working correctly.

When you are connected to the Internet and you click on the QT player (usually in the dock) do you got any content or just the bare bone QT player itself?

His Mac came with QT pre-installed. I'm stumped.
May 1, 2007 11:32AM PDT

And if QT was already installed, why did he download it again? A Mac that has QT pre-installed should work just fine. I just don't know what anyone could have done, or be doing to QT, so it doesn't work.

from this poster but I suspect there are two things going on here but they are being condensed into the one problem.

QT?
May 2, 2007 6:55PM PDT

well guys, went to Apple, downloaded still ANOTHER thing of QT and when it came to installing got to the part about Where and it wouldn't allow me to use either...now what??? Again I do appreciate all help, Thanks Michele

Wouldn't allow you to use either what?
May 2, 2007 9:50PM PDT

How many hard drives do you have on that machine?
You cannot install it onto the disk image, if there is one, but unless you have a full HD, the other option should work.
There must be some sort of error message or explanation as to why it feels it is not possible to install the software.
Is there an exclamation point on the HD of choice. If so, what is the message under the HD, or in that box?

To say it won't allow you to install is a little too vague

more info please

whoa whoa..was just trying to see the differences in all the 'stuff' that is now on my desktop(?) and they are disappearing!!! What is going on? masp

Let me ask this:
May 3, 2007 3:43AM PDT

You have a new Intel Mac. Are you booted in Mac mode or PC mode? I ask because if you are booted in PC mode and you attempt to download QT from any site, the site "sees" that you are using a PC and offers the "PC version" of QT. If you are working in Mac mode, then QT for Mac will be offered. Now, if you are in Mac mode and you are in fact downloading QT for Mac, you should specify that you want to save it to the Applications folder. But typically, when downloading QT from the Apple site, it automatically loads QT into your Applications folder by itself.

We have so many questions but we aren't really getting the technical information from you that would help us solve this problem.

Rephrase the question
May 3, 2007 9:58PM PDT

Have you ever installed a copy of Windows on your Mac?

If the answer is NO, then you are always running your computer as a Mac with OS X.

If the answer is YES, then you "may" be running your computer with Windows XP or similar.

After you start up your computer, do you see the icons on the Right hand side of the screen, or do you see them on the Left hand side of the screen? (Hard Drive, Cd's etc.)

Perian
May 4, 2007 8:42PM PDT

Sounds like you are having a problem with the installation process. At the risk of muddying the waters further, when you *do* get it going so that you can at least watch the videos on the Apple web site(which has to be some form of lower commonon denominator) then check out Perian

This is a bolt-on-goodie for Quicktime that enables it to play loads of other video formats like .ogg, DivX that are common on Internet web sites. It's free(Google it)

Good luck!

- Collapse -
OK, Let's get back to basics.
May 4, 2007 11:46PM PDT

Take the OS X installation disks that came with the machine and insert it into the DVD slot. Once the DVD is mounted on the desktop, double click it and find the icon that says, "Install OS X" or words to that effect.
Double click it and follow the instructions.
After the machine has rebooted from the DVD, go through the install process BUT choose Archive and Install as your option. ONLY choose this option. Do NOT proceed with the install if you have not chosen this option.
All your data will be saved and replaced in its correct location after the install has finished.

When you reboot this machine after the install, QT should work for you. Be aware that your OS will need to be updated, using Software Update, to the current level.

Good Luck

I'm still stumped..Why is he reinstalling QT?
May 5, 2007 5:04AM PDT

The Mac comes with QT installed and ready to play QT movies. What prompted this user to fiddle with QT and download it again? His Mac should have been able to play any of the QT movies on the Apple website right from the start. The user never gave us his step-by-step process when he tried playing QT movies. This might help.

Trailers question mark
Jun 21, 2007 6:27PM PDT

Peeps I had the same question mark problem with the Apple movie trailers site on Windows. I also had the clever idea of enabling flash playback with Quicktime :S

Here's my fix

* I unticked "Enable playback of Adobe Flash tracks" in Quicktime preferences

* I went to Add/Remove programs and clicked on "change" for the Quicktime installation. Then I chose to repair the installation.

* I went to the Adobe site and re-downloaded the flash plugin (for Mozilla) and installed it.

I'm now watching the trailers without problems again.
If you look in FF Options>Content>File Types>Manage
you need to make sure SWF files open with the Flash plugin I think

Hope this helps someone Happy
