It sounds like a legal issue so you need to prepare your case and move forward. It should be interesting how it turns out.
However, blowing a motherboard does not mean we can't stop using Windows 98. I've installed that on XP inside "Virtual Box" and it ran fine. The last few apps that required 98 live on with an added benefit that I can copy the virtual box file to any other PC and run the app again there without an OS or app install.
And again, blowing a motherboard does not mean we can't get another 98 capable PC. Here these are still plentiful.

I have been using QB Pro 5.0 for about 15 years with great success. It does everything I need without burdening me with features I do not want. I WANT to keep it. I had been running it on an old WIN98 SE computer which just blew it's motherboard. Luckily QB Pro 5.0 can also be loaded on a WIN XP Pro system which I have done, and I took the old HD and added it to the XP system as a supplemental drive, which allows me to access all my historical data. It works well except that QB is requiring I call Intuit and get, and enter, a registration number if I want to keep using the software. Intuit is claiming that the software is no longer being supported and will not give out a Registration Number. I claim this has nothing to do with technical support as the software works fine, I just want a number to enter to allow the software to run. This seems to be a money grab by Intuit to force me to buy a new, bloated, replacement system. I tried to get transferred to someone in the States to help me, but they would not do it, claiming no one in the States can help me. Can someone give me some guidance on my options?
