quick restore:..."read fault on drive N: abort? retry? ignore?

Apr 28, 2004 8:09AM PDT

My hunch is that "drive N" is my CD, and that there is a scratch or mar that wont allow transmission of data from part of it.

Is that what "drive N" is?

If it _is_ a scratch, whats the best way to remedy it in your opinion?

If that isnt the problem, what is?

what operating system? What are you trying to accomplish? Is this a recovery disk you are trying to use to reload the system?

That kind of error usually indicates either a media error or a hardware fault.

If a media fault, get a new copy. If it is a restore disk the computer manufacturer should be able to replace it. You might also try copying it on someone elses machine that has a CR/W. If it succeeds and you get an error on the reproduced media, it might be time for a new CD drive.

Yes, this is a recovery disk. I had a file missing which was necessary to load windows. My OS is Win98. There are no copies available that I know of, unless I can find one on Ebay or something. Ive already checked the Company, Compaq, for a copy of the recovery disks, when I thought I had lost them.

Ive tried the same recovery twice, with the same exact result. Maybe I can make the attempt to copy the disk to another CD to see what happens. Id like to first get rid of any scratches in case that is the problem.

Im not sure what you mean by "media error". And I dont believe its the CD player at fault, since I got the same result, twice.

Media means the CD disc. Do you get a similar error using another disk in that drive? If yes it may be the drive. I am pretty sure you can find a Compaq media recovery disk for Windows 98 on E-bay or via a google search. Depending on the missing file, you can get it off almost any Win98 system CD and you may even be able to use the repair feature.

You can buy cd cleaners at walmart cheap, they have scratch repair kits too, also buy a cd-rom cleaner as it may be the drive itself is dirty

Usually when you get that message it means no disc in the drive. You set up the drive letters go into My Computer and click on the N drive to see what it is
