Quick Launch Toolbar icon change randomly..

after cleaning viruses from the PC.

OS Windows XP-SP1, most critical updates. Nav 2003, Spybot SD, Spywareblaster, Adaware 6.181

last week I'm doing a virus scan and Adware/spyware, using NAV 2003, TrendMicro online scan, Bitdefender, Pest Patrol, Spybot, Adaware... they found few viruses and adware/spyware (something like search toolbar, browser hijacker and porn site)

I choose to fix/delete them automatically (whenever available) also deleting many files and some registry entry (guided by adware/spyware removal on many available site, including many tips from this forum)

After many reboots, I run all of them again (scan virus and adware/spyware utility) and have not found any virus or adware/spyware.

But sometimes my quick launch bar icon change randomly i.e. I have Internet explorer icon in there, sometimes it change to other program icon. It will be back to correct icon after closing the quick launch bar and opening it again.

Question is, how can I fix this problem.

Thank you for any help.

Gakada, Just A Suggestion...

In reply to: Quick Launch Toolbar icon change randomly..

...It would be a good idea to run Error Checking/Chkdsk and Defrag in order clean up things a little. First, clean out the "junk" files on the machine by following the instructions in the link below:

How To Clean Unwanted Files From The Hard Drive

AFter that, run the "Error Checking/Chkdsk" program to fix disk/file errors that might have occurred. Here's a link about how to run "Error Checking/Chkdsk":

How To Run 'Error Checking/Chkdsk' On Win2000/XP

After that, run Defrag by clicking on Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Try this :

To resolve this behavior, use one or more of the following methods:
Press the F5 key to refresh the icons in the current folder.
Close and then reopen a window that contains incorrect icons.
Restart your computer.
Re-create the ShellIconCache file. This file is re-created automatically when you change your display's color depth. Follow these steps to change your display's color depth to a new setting and then change it back to the original setting:
Right-click the desktop and then click Properties.
Click the Settings tab.
Change the color depth from the current setting to a new setting. For example, change from Highest (32 bit) to Lowest (16 bit).
Click Apply, and then click Yes to accept the changes.
Change the color depth back to its original setting.
Click Apply, and then click Yes to accept the changes.
Using Registry Editor, add the Max Cached Icons string value with a value data of 2000 to the following registry key, and then restart your computer:

If the icons are still incorrect, delete the ShellIconCache file. The Max Cached Icons value data range is between 100 and 4096. The default value is 500.
