Quick Launch Bar Win2KPro

I cannot get my Quick Launch Bar icons to set in the order I want them. When I had Win98, I could drag them where I wanted, reboot and they would stay there. With Win2KPro, after I reset them, they revert back when I reboot. I have searched this site for possible solutions to no avail. I did find some XP suggestions that did not work in Win2K-Pro. I tried to rename each and assign a number to them -- but even that did not reset them to my desired order on reboot. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank-you!

This was noted in all versions of Windows. It has something to do with sorting in the directory that holds the quicklaunch items. I've been able to break this by sorting all directories.

The sorting is not a noted "feature."

I have been to the directory that holds the Quick Launch items and have tried to both auto-set and manually change their order. Some icons will reset in the order I want them, others will reset in a group to themselves. I can't find any logic to how they auto-sort (not alphabetical or by date added.) I guess I don't understand what you meant by "able to break this by sorting all directories." Could you elaborate? I appreciate your time and knowledge!

Just sharing I looked at it, but haven't researched it deeply. Another forum member just let it sort, but renamed the shortcuts to "1This", "2That" and so on.

http://www.google.com/search?&q=quicklaunch+order finds other discussions but I've yet to find a definitive treatment on the subject. Now that I've written such, Murphy will post more about it.

Thanks, I have googled it as well and it seems to be perplexing to many! I tried the "numbering each" suggestion, but it still reverts to its own re-sort. It is weird in that it will sort into "mini groups".

Okay, I admit I am a little thick sometimes! I told you that I tried numbering the icons to get them to sort alphabetically. When I did that, (after re-booting) they would re-sort into groups. What I did not realize is that when you alphabetize, the number "11" comes before the number "2". My order on the Quick launch bar was: 1,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,20,21...
I solved my problem by renaming them 1a,1b,1c,1d,....
That worked when I went to the Quick Launch Directory and sorted "by name"! Now when I re-boot, they come up in MY order!

I was wondering why that workaround was failing...

I must apologize that I don't know that area in depth, just a workaround. Maybe, someday a solid fix will be offered, but it is related to sorting of the directory.

For those that don't want to rename the files, then a sort by date is possible and the use of a file date changer (not supplied with this OS) and sort on the date.

Bob,

I am using 2kpro and I do not have any problem positioning icons in the quick launch bar - I am not using any special naming or sorting of the directory either. Am I to assume my setup is an anomaly? If my box is different than most/all others how can I help?

How to break it.

In reply to: Re: Thanks for the report.

I was able to break it by sorting the quicklaunch directory and setting the view to same.

While I can break it, I have not investigated how to unbreak it. However, the workaround works so I am in no hurry to unbreak it.
