Question

Quick disconnect wire connectors - non-crimp

Jan 22, 2012 7:32AM PST

I want to put quick connectors in the power leads to the fan on the side panel of my PC. That would let me move the panel out of the way while I work inside. Since there are only 2 wires I don't want to have to buy a $20-$30 tool to make the connections. Radio Shack suggested their crimp connections could be closed with standard pliers, but that doesn't seem to make a solid connection.

Thank you,
Pete

Solder to what kind of connector?

Soldering would be OK if I knew what connector to use to allow easy disconnecting. Do you use heat shrink tubing for insulation?

I can do that. Or electrical tape since I have that on hand.

There are some million connectors out there. I can't guess what is available in your country or city.

Can you just add some length to the wire? It looks tacky but I do this sometimes. I use solder and heat shrink but I have plenty of scrap around to do this. Add a foot or two of wire of similar gauge and flex. If you're bent on a connector, I'd just get one of those molex type power cable extenders, cut it in the middle, push out the unneeded pins and splice them into your existing wiring.

I didn't mean to suggest using the unneeded pins but discarding them.

This isn't rocket science, I'm sure you can figure it out. Other posters covered just about what needs to be done. What you need to do is decide how pretty you want this to be. If you have access to similar wiring, then ask any local shop to "junk dive" or dumpster dive when closed. Also, any decent h/w store or home outlet has the basics. Though, I know you don't want to spend $20-30, think the continued use of whatever brought. Wouldn't a "Leatherman" outfit fit the bill for many future PC repairs.
