Resolved Question

Questions before upgrading.

Jul 30, 2013 7:19AM PDT

Hey all. I want to upgrade from windows 7 ultimate 32 bit to windows 8 64 bit. I'm not sure about this, as I'm afraid I'll lose my game collection.
I have some Games and MMOs, on local disk D. I keep all my programs and windows files on disk C. I'm OK with losing my programs, I have backup DVDs for all of them, but Games.. my internet is slow, so redownloading them will take weeks, if not months.
I could back em up on my relative's HDD, but I want to know if that will be necessary.
Thanks in advance Happy

Questions before upgrading.

You can not upgrade from a 32 Bit Operating System to 64 Bit Operating
System. You will have to do a clean install and you will loose all your
installed programs.
If your documents and games are on a different partition than that of the
operating system then they will be saved. But if they are installed in the
current 32 Bit OS then they will not work after the upgrade to 64 Bit OS as
its only possible by a Clean Install.

Bad advice.

"If your documents and games are on a different partition than that of the

That is bad advice. I've lost count of folk that lost it all during an OS install even with the documents on another drive. Should it work? Yes. Does it always work out? No.

Don't need an advice anymore.. for now. Upgraded to win 8 32 bit, somehow my instalation disk didn't allow me to install 64 bit version on 32 bit, probably need to boot from bios, which I can not do, as my bios got a password when I installed win 8, and now all I can do is reset the whole bios. Don't wanna do that, have some settings i don't want to mess with.

This one is easy! No. All is gone.

There is no upgrade method that keeps apps and files.

And again, no. Having them on drive D is no assurance they will survive. This one is well discussed and it's like the high wire act without a net. It doesn't always end well.

Do we need to repeat advice about backups and more?

If you had make a backup of what you downloaded (the setup program of those games) it would have been easy to re-install them from that backup.
Now it seems you'll have to buy the DVD's of those games or spend a considerable time to redownload them. Or maybe you have a friend or relation with a faster broadband connection?
