Questions about syncronization and using OE 6 on 2 computers

Apr 9, 2011 4:22PM PDT

Hello All:

I do have some limited experience with OE, but I could use some help with two issues. A friend wants help setting up a second computer at his house to share the same e-mail address using OE 6. Both computers are running XP Pro with OE 6. One is a laptop. It took me about 30-60 seconds to set up my test laptop to download e-mails from my test Comcast e-mail account.

But, it did not leave those e-mails on Comcast's server, they now only reside on my test laptop. From my limited understanding, you can change the syncronization settings so OE 6 will copy those Comcast e-mails to OE 6, but also leave them on the Comcast e-mail account as well. Is this true and if so how do you do it?

Secondly, he wants to access the Comcast e-mail from both his desktop and laptop, both using OE 6. Is there a way to do that where the OE 6 on both machines will have the e-mails syncronized? I was wondering if doing this would involve having the desktop and the laptop networked together. Does anyone know if this is possible or how to do it?

Thank You,

Lee

Once the account is created on one machine, simply export the account information to the other PC along with the address book and any email folders. Set the accounts (both) to leave a copy on the server. Now, whichever PC accesses the accounts, the same emails will be downloaded.

The address book will have to be updated manually as OE has no "sync" function.

Now. Leaving copies on the server is not really a good idea. I have my laptop set to leave them on the server and my desktop set to delete them. If I'm traveling I can access all my emails. When I get home I download everything to the desktop and clear the server.

Hey, thank you! I will try this as soon as I have time.

Why isn't it a good idea to leave a copy of the messages on the server?

Ever sent a mail to somebody and got a message returned that his mailbox was full, so your mail couldn't be delivered? That's the reason.

If you do it, you'll have to manually clear the inbox on the server via webmail, or download a third time from another windows account that's set to remove it from the server. That should be done regularly once you know all mail is on the regular place on the first and second computer.

I didn't even think of that.

The e-mail servers I use have very generous limits and I also make sure I stay on top of it and make sure there's space on the online accounts.

THANKS!
