Question/Help regarding Volusion Shopping Cart functionality

I am looking to see if my proposed solution to a dilemma is even possible. I feel like it is. However, I can’t seem to adequately communicate this to anyone.

Essentially, I am looking to see if Volusion or a Volusion developer can set up for me product pages, that merely provide me with a dropdown menu/list of other products in that same category….on the product page. That is it in a nutshell.

The reason- I am selling custom window coverings. My products are very complex in that the price can and will vary, based on width and heights of every individual window. In addition, the pricing has no real algorithms in which I could apply some sort of reliable surcharge that can add up to the price I need. One other thing, the idea of building child products, really overloads the system and makes it unstable.

I have been down really every road, and the best solution I have surmised is the way I am thinking.

Any time I have spoken with a third party developer (even those suggested by Volusion), I am advised that we build something from the ground up, and abandon the idea. I would rather do this, because if this small feature can be provided, I can simply get to the business of uploading my pricing, options, and images…and start selling. Otherwise…I just need to leave Volusion.
