Question regarding iMac G3 displaying a kernel panic

Jun 26, 2006 1:48PM PDT

Hi! I took home a friends iMac G3 to fix for her after it began displaying a kernel panic, you know the grey screen that says:"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power Button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
The specs of this G3 are as follows: 450 mHz,512mb of RAM, 40 gb Harddrive running OSX Panther. I have tried booting from the install CD to use the Disk utility, but nothing happens. It just sits around on that same grey screen. I have to restart the Mac and hold the mouse button down in order to get the Disc back. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Is it the Harddrive, or perhaps the PMU chip or logic board needs to be reset? Thanks in advanced for any help you all may have.

Finally got it to boot to the disk and found out the harddrive has conked out. Thanks anyway.
