Question on Cell phone connections to Internet with lAP TOP

I have moved up to a Laptop which has wireless capability which I understand.
My Question is I would like to connect my cell phone to the laptop and use it to connect to the internet.
I have an Isp, I am told that a data cable would be neede to hook up the phone through the USB and software to make everything work together, Somewhere it was mentioned about a GPRS system, thisI don't understand.
I have also seen certain phones such as the Nokia 6230 and Motoral V551 and V220 which are said to be wireless internet capable
I am at a lost as to the mechanics of this can someone shed some light
