Question on AVG Free Version....

Mar 15, 2004 2:42AM PST

I have Nortons Sys Works on my WinXP puter, but switched to AVG free version on my Win98se puter about a month or so ago when the Nortons subscription ran out. It has:
Version 6.0.610 - Released 9-2-03
Just noticed the Virus Database 390 - released 3-3-04. I had thought I updated a couple times since that date, apparently it didn't take.

Went in to update definitions and a popup indicated that AVG could not make a internet connection and for me to use my browser to get (I was connected to the internet). That has never happened prior to the last update 3-3-04. Well, anyway went to grisoft.com on IE and was able to get the update definition download. It (AVG) now shows:
Virus Database 490 - Release 3-15-04.

I noticed the download was only 157.2kb and it was a "u67116qwo.h" or something like that.

QUESTION:

Checking the history of downloads at
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_history.php
there are 10 updates that were issued since 3-3-04.
WERE THESE 10 updates included in my todays 3-15-04 update of 157kb?

Am a little leary as checking the AVG Virus Encyclopoedia, some of those viruses issued since 3-3-04 are not listed.

John they were. your definition/ version which is available in the help tab of AVG should be the same as that which has been posted at the website.

Hi David, sorry I had not read your post before posting the error post below.

I believe you have the pay version of AVG. I've read everything in the "help" tab as pertains to the AVG
Virus Database. Clicking on the 'Info' then 'Program' tab it shows:

"Program Version: 6.0.624 Release date: 9-2-03
Virus Database: 401 Release date: 3-15-04"

The Virus Database before today read:
"Virus Database: 390 Released date: 3-3-04

As far as I can tell the latest version of the free AVG definitions is 622. Someone with free please correct me.

So, should not my Virus Database be the same number as the latest version?

Just searched with grisoft and what I downloaded today was:
Update number: 624
Update file: u6116qwo.bin

So, I just don't understand the "Virus Database: 401 Release date 3-15-04" that changed today from 390 on the AVG Info tab.

Thanks for the assurance that the 10 updates from 3-3-04 to 3-15-04 were included.

Error correction and another question....
Mar 15, 2004 3:06AM PST

In my above post....Instead of Virus Database 490, Release 3-15-04 it should read Virus Database 401, Release 3-15-04.

Question:
Should my Virus Database read 622, the number shown in the History link for the latest download?

for AVG free it should read: 6.0.624 - (date of today)

Thanks Marianna.

My free AVG installation is just a little over a month old and may be a little different in how this stuff is shown.

Clicking on the Info tab then Program tab it showed prior to todays download:

Program Version: 6.0.610 Release date 9-2-03
Virus Database: 390 Release date 3-3-04

After I downloaded the update of definitions today:

Program Version: 6.0.624 Release date 9-2-03
Virus Database: 401 Release date 3-15-04

Please see my latest post to David. So, I do have the right latest update (624), just the confusion I am still having with the "Virus Database 401..Release date 3-15-04." Wink

After I downloaded the update of definitions today:

Program Version: 6.0.624 Release date 9-2-03
Virus Database: 401 Release date 3-15-04

All is fine with your version Happy

I have been having the same problem. I have AVG Free Version and have been unable to connect properly to Grisoft. However, the following fix seemed to work like a charm. Locate the url.ini file in the AVG folder (probably c:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6). It has two references to "free.grisoft.cz". Change both of them to "www.grisoft.cz". Restart the computer. If you downloaded the free version of AVG from a satelite site like cnet, you may not be able to locate url.ini. In that case, delete the program and reload it direct from Grisoft's site. This has solved the program for me, hopefully it will work for you too.

This is some advice I got from Marianna via a member of the forum.It allows you 3 options to download.

Go to C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG

Find the file url.ini. Change the file name to url.old and save. The saved file will appear on the same page. You can change it back if you find things don't work out, but they will. Then in the original file delete all the text and paste in:

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com

[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=3

Restart your computer and you will find next time you run your AVG control panel to down load you will have three options in the dropdown menu. Marianna tells me that, www.grisoft.com is the best.

As I say, there is no danger in doing this as you have the old text saved. If you want to return to your old setup, merely delete the new url.ini file and rename the old saved file url.ini

JR - read here for: Differential updates past 516
Mar 15, 2004 7:53AM PST

AVG 6.0 now supports smaller update files! The capability to support smaller updates has been introduced in update version 516. Going forward, all AVG 6.0 updates will be differential updates from version 516. For this reason, all AVG 6.0 systems must be updated to version 516. In order to perform any AVG 6.0 update to a version higher than 516, it will be necessary to have previously performed update 516. Check the version you currently have by selecting the "Information" tab in AVG Control Center - "Program Version." If the version number displayed is lower than 6.0.516, it will be necessary to run the update 516 first.
