question and help - installing graphics card

Apr 29, 2005 3:28AM PDT

i just got a radeon 9600 and i have an nforce 2 mboard. i've never installed anything on windows xp before and i want to make sure i do it right. mainly i'm not sure what to do about disabling/uninstalling the integrated graphics. a while back, i noticed my brother's computer was running certain games like Diablo 2 better than it should. i checked the hardware profiles and he had his radeon and integrated graphics running. is it possible to run both together? or what should i do about the integrated before i install the card?

i'm guessing he OC'ed his card
as you can't run the two together

you have to dis-able the integrated graphics
and install the Radon 9600
assuming you have the correct slot

it should have directions in the manual (just check it's user's guide)

Go into your bios or device manager and disable.

installed..

i got it installed, thanks. after i installed it though the screen position and size got messed up. i got it mostly the same as it was, but i think it's still got a pincushion effect, and on both sides of the screen it fades into a dim white line on the edges. i had to push the sides of the screen off so they wouldn't show as bad. i remember having this same problem with a radeon 7500.

Also can be your monitor model

IF your monitor is not detected exactly by its manufacturer and model # see if you can get a driver for that as it helps the system know its capabilities. Your problem sounds like you might need to work with refresh rates. Distortion sometimes means you've stretched the monitor's limits. You might find some geometry settings in the adjustments.

nah

i've barely had the computer for a week, so i'm not too worried about the monitor's drivers. the refresh is at 85Hz. i did turn on composite sync when i was playing with the controls and a minute later all the text looked like it was jumping up and down. but i turned it off and i was having distortion before then. i just started the computer back up and had to change the monitor settings again because my Start button was falling off the screen. the monitor had all the same settings i left it at, but the screen went blank a second when it was loading the ATi toolbar button. maybe the ati drivers are still adjusting themselves, hope idon't have to reset the monitor every day.

when ati catalyst control center starts up, the screen does go blank. but not from adjusting itself i think.

Blanking screen

This is supposed to be ATI driver testing the monitor and or system's capabilities as far as video accelleration goes. It could get things wrong...especially if the incorrect monitor is detected. You can manually override or retest.

seems ok

it seems to be fine for now, guess it was just the drivers configuring the first few times i restarted.
