question about sata controller

I am thinking of using an old pc for data storage was thinking of getting a sata controller to attach my hdd's do any of them have an option for output i would like to plug it into my current pc or is there another wired option

You'll have to tell what you mean by "output."

A common use for an old PC is as a NAS. If the old PC is running a Windows or Linux you just add your drives and share them like any file server over the past few decades. It would plug into your router.

I went back to the classic Ethernet connection. Today I just put such on my router as a NAS.

If you do want to try this thing, be aware that it emulates network shares or at least the one I had did. It was removed for many reasons among reliability and the way it open shares that I felt were uncalled for.

Again, you may have all you need. Just set up file sharing on the old PC. And done.

Keep it simple

Get a hdd usb enclosure.
Put the old hdd in the enclosure.
When you want to use it to write data to or read data from plug it in.

Get the old machine out of the mix.
