Question about post editing

Mar 10, 2007 2:46AM PST

Is there any way that you could actually make it so we can edit our own posts?

Editing posts...
Mar 10, 2007 3:49AM PST

That is something that has been brought up many times before, and thus far rejected due to the problems it would lead to. For the reasoning behind this, see Lee's official response as well as my own concerns. Even if it were approved, such functionality has not yet been implemented by the engineers, meaning they would have to go through the process of coding and testing it before it would be introduced. Thus, I don't see if making an appearance in the immediate future. Instead, try to preview your post whenever possible and post all updates as replies.

Got a good idea

On a other forum, which I visit frequently has the editing comments feature, however since Lee has stated how bad it is, I'm suggesting at least allowing of editing comments but only for a certain amount of time, the other forum I visit will allow me to edit a post at 15 minutes, after that I can no longer edit that post. I don't know what you think but I think its a great idea, of course if you are frightened with the excessive editing, you can give users only 5 minutes of whatever Happy

You can do this already.

Don't click submit for 5 minutes.

Pretty funny, recheck your post and make sure everything is spelled correctly during that time or you didn't post a word twice, right? LOL

Ummm....

People still want the ability to edit their post, on the behalf on what most forum users want at least give them an option to correct spelling mistakes at least once, after posting. It's just that I'm one of those clumsy ones who sometimes press the submit button and I haven't finished yet, so theres no way to edit that post, so I would have to correct it in another. While I agree that once you posted it's done, it ccould be practical to allow an option to at least edit a spelling mistake (only on the condition that thats the only time someone can edit). That's not bad is it?

spell check

FF2 has it built in (i believe there is an add-on for IE too)

a workaround is to write your post in any application that has a spell checker e.g. your email program, then C&P to the reply box

I use spell check
Mar 10, 2007 7:57PM PST

I always use spell checker when writing posts. However I've found how Firefox isn't very useful on all words that I can't pronounce and I have to throw up Open Office and copy and paste that word so I can spell check it, I hope they improve the spell checker in a later version of Firefox.

I suggested that way back and Lee gave me the impression he was interested.

What I do.
Mar 10, 2007 9:23PM PST

If I am replying to a post where I believe my own post is going to be long or involved, I use the tabs feature available on most browsers now. I right click the "Reply" button and select "Open in a new tab".

There, I can compose my reply, spell check it and preview it, and then before I hit the Submit button, I check the discussion in the previous tab for any later additions that may affect my reply.

But whether or not my post is long or involved, I always hit the Preview button and read through my own post. I find lots of errors that way.

I understand what you are saying

I would like the edit post button only because sometimes I look like a complete fool by posting words twice (makes you look like you are stutter) or something. Either way editing posts is something I could do without. Cnet.com is the only forum I have ever been to where you couldn't edit your posts, but it's one of few where I have never been banned on. So I'll just have to live with it.

I really don't think the rules here are that bad. Thank you, it's just something I'll have to live with.

(NT) Why were you banned at the other forums

being bad I guess

The last forum I was banned on was the metclub forum (the 5th of March 2007) and I have no idea why I was banned from there. I e-mailed the admin and he never replied. I was banned from there over a year ago and he left me back, maybe he had a guilt trip or something for leaving me back, I don't know.

You don't want to know why I was banned from there last year, actually it was 2005 when I got banned from there. I should have been banned.

Kind of curious as to why you would want to know or care, but I guess you were just curious.
