Question

Question about possibility of malware on photo

Nov 26, 2016 1:14PM PST

My question is a bit odd, but i bet you guys can answer that as well Happy
The situation is this- currently i am using a laptop that i fear was physically compromised (as i mentioned in other threads, but without any sings or evidences of intrusion). I did a factory reset on it, and i know that some malwares can survive that, i will reinstall the machine in the near future (or use alternative bootable OS for doing my work.) My job partly consists for managing facebook accounts, so i need to work on photoshop.

Here is what i am currently doing:
A take photos with my phone, than i upload then on a special facebook account that i specifically use for transferring, than i download the photos through the account on the laptop that i dont fully trust, than i work the photos though photoshop (usually for about 10-20 minutes), than i upload the back on that special account, than i download the photos from that special account on the phone (that way i do not connect the phone to the laptop at all), than i upload them from the phone to the normal accounts that i manage, than i delete the photos from the phone.
Following that exact procedure, is there any possible way that i can infect my phone?
Thanks Happy

R.Proffitt yes, i know how little the chances are, but it's good for me to know those Happy However, the way i see it the links you gave me the photos seem to be specifically designed previously (if i am not wrong) to infect the system. While in my case the photos are taken through my own phone and are simply modified through photoshop on a laptop and than reuploaded on facebook and downloaded again from there. Sorry if didn't understand exactly Happy

(you knew I'd say that.)

Anyhow, the moment the image went out of your control, you really can't be sure. And you did open the discussion door to "any" possibility.

Will it happen to you? The odds are that it won't.

Yes i knew, there is nothing impossible i believe..

Good, so basically, even that the odds are ultra low, they still exist, and a compromised laptop can harm them and therefor harm the phone as well. But does sites like facebook allow you to upload photos with maliscious content, dont they have any restrictions to prevent someone uploading anything like that.
And is there difference between Save the image and Downloading a photo? Because whenyou tap on a photo you could do eihter of those?

The problem is

That everytime you think all the bugs/holes are killed/filled someone finds yet another way.

As to the save/download, yes. A tap would download and view it, where a download means it is downloaded and saved to a file. Please don't take any offense here. Some folk just need this written out.

No offence at all. Dont worry!

I'm cautious, but the OP seems to have a phobia about malware. If they're looking for zero risk, don't use the internet or plug anything into your PC.

I have run into folk whose PC got infected.

They had serious trust issues for years after that.

Me? It's been a long time but I wanted to do one thing before I backed up my stuff.
Lesson learned.

Yes, i am sure it's just paranoia. BUt still..

In fact, i am almost 99% there is nothing neither to my laptop or anything else, but this 1% can be life killer. I know the phobia extends probably way to much, but i'd rather know all the possibilities out there, since a few people depend on me on this one.
