Question about OS X Tiger/iPod Nano

Nov 9, 2005 5:57AM PST

So, I just discovered I'm getting an iPod Nano as a gift. (Woohoo!) However, while reading up on the specs, I discovered:

Mac system requirements

* Macintosh computer with USB port (USB 2.0 recommended)
* Mac OS X v10.3.4 or later

I'm currently on a G4 "Sawtooth" (AGP Graphics) running OS X Jaguar (10.2.Cool, with a OWC Mercury Extreme 1.4GHz processor upgrade and 1 GB RAM.

Does anyone know if I _truly_ need to upgrade my OS? I was thinking about it anyways, but the plot thickens...

Reading up on OS X Tiger on Apple's site, I saw this:

"Processor upgrade cards are not supported."

ARRGH! Is this true, or just a ploy to get people to buy new machines?

So my question is twofold:
Is there anyone out there successfully running OS X Tiger on a G4 with a processor upgrade?

and

Is there anyone out there successfully using an iPod Nano with 10.2.8?

Thanks in advance!

I am running Tiger, 10.4.3, on an AGP Graphics G4 (Sawtooth) with an OWC Dual 1.25Ghz processor and 1.5 GB of RAM.
Unless you have installed a USB 2.0 PCI card, your machine does not have USB 2.0 but the Nano will still work, slowly, with USB 1.1.
I'm not sure if the requirement for 10.3.4 is cast in stone, it may well be, but the phrase "upgrade cards not supported" only means that if you have a problem, you are on your own. If you still have the original G4 processor, you could put it back in and go with it. Personally, I had not problem moving up the scale and Tiger is definitely worth the move from 10.2.8. Go for it. You will like it.

Hope this helps

Excellent!

It does help, thanks a ton! In fact, I just happened to pick up the Nano today (wow is it tiny!), and it's working just fine, even under 10.2.8! I was aware that things might be slow on my USB 1.1 ports, but I'm willing to deal with it. In fact, I'm transferring a playlist as we speak, and it's certainly not breaking any speed records, but it's working!

I kinda figured that was the issue with the "processor upgrades not supported" caveat. Glad to hear from someone with the same system working well with Tiger and the Nano. Thanks again for your help!
