no

most fans run at 100% for their entire life
which is around 100k hours

which is like 3 years-ish of straight running

and 55C is hot for any CPU, especially a Prescott (iirc, because Pressies (iirc) are shutting down at 75C due to heat...)

i'd look into better CPU cooling (if it was me) as it will aid the CPU's life (even if that is inside "operational limitis" lower temps add life...my 2600 T-bred B was inside operational limitis running at 50C + for a year, and it DIED AFTER ABOUT 14 mos., so just cuz it's inside operational limts, doesn't mean it's good for the CPU)

for a new HSF
i'd consider the XP-90 or XP-90C (if your feeling like spending more money and adding a crud load of weight, that is only the C, it's an XP-90 but out of solid copper, which = heavy)

and a 92MM Panaflo high speed or U. Highspeed

btw
the XP-90 is from Thermalright
I own their SI-97 heatsink (for AthlonXP, it's directly based off the XP-90, just adapted to Socket A) and it's amazing

Help
Apr 10, 2005 12:13PM PDT

After installing the program to run the fans at 100%. I changed it to 100 and after that, i decided against it and changed it lower. But no matter what it stayed at 100 and i exited the program and ran it again. But still didn't work, so i tried restarting. But the menu stayed at Windows is now shutting down. SO i performed a force shutdown and when i tried starting the computer up again, the hard drive light flashes for a couple seconds, both optical disk drives flash and then nothing. The screen doesn;t turn on and the power supply fan is at 100%, which i am sure it was not like that before when i turn on my computer. Nothing was changed to the computer, except the program. The program is called Smartfan and i downloaded it at downloads.com. I need help!!! Also, i have no system restore disk. As this computer is a compaq, the restore disk is on the hard drive. Also, i believe my warranty should still be intact as i've made no modifications to the computer. Thnx for any replys.

damasta55r is i, and nerdyboy1234 is my brother. SInce my computer was broken, i used his computer, but i forgot it was logged into his account and didn't really remember my password so i just used his. As for the problem, i fixed it. I think it was a problem with a driver device because after removing the power cable and pushing the power, the computer started up again. Thnx anyway.

What kind of PC??? Does it have any case fans?? John

It is
Apr 22, 2005 12:46PM PDT

a Compaq SA4000T with a 3.6GHz P4. I beelieve it has a case fan, but depends on the power supply fan for much of its cooling. The processor fan i think is an intel certified heatsink and fan. Even on max, the regular temp when idle is 49-52 degreese and with a light load 52-58. While on fs2004 the temp rises from 58-as high as 65 degrees.
