question about Canon Powershot S2 IS

Mar 10, 2006 10:06AM PST

After tons of research, I am thinking of getting the canon powershot S2 IS. I am really sold on it- I have an older digital elph (3 years old, only 2 megapixels) that I can't wait to upgrade from, and I used to do SLR photography, so I want something that I can do more professional photography with. I love the features, and the weight and feel of it. And the price is great as well. The other SLR cameras are too much $$ (this one I can find for like $350 so plus accessories it is perfect).

My only hesitation with the camera is that it came out nearly a year ago. Technology changes so fast, I worry it will be out of date in just a few years. It is something I would like to get as many years out of as possible.

Any idea when a newer model is coming out? Is it unwise to buy a model that is a year old already? Or does that just make it a better price?

Wow- the S3 is beautiful-- but I googled around and it seems to be only an incremental upgrade from the s2. From what I have read, the S2 would still be a great camera. And I am asking for it for my birthday- which is in April and not May. Hmmmm the s3 is something to think about though...
