Question about an issue

Jun 27, 2007 6:30AM PDT

I think the fan is gone on the computer. When I turn the computer on I don't see the fan moving in the back of the computer and today the computer shut off by itself and wouldn't let me turn it back on for about 5 minutes. How can I be sure if this is really a fan issue or not? Thank you.

Re: fan not working
Jun 27, 2007 6:59AM PDT

Michelle,

If you can't see the fan running it is NOT running. And that will cause the temperature inside the case to become so high that the machine turns off to protect the CPU. That fully fits into the diagnosis.

I've had this with a rather high priced rather high quality PC. When I went to the shop with it they set the fan speed in the BIOS to "constantly high" instead of "variable", because somehow variable meant that it wouldn't get enough power to run. Problem solved, although I've got more fan noise now than I prefer. But it's primarily my sons PC and he doesn't mind.

The other possibility is that the fan is just broken and needs to be replaced. Better take it to a repair shop and let them have a look. It's not the most expensive repair you can imagine. Better do it fast. It's not good for the PC to be too hot.

Kees

PS. If ever posting again, think of a more descriptive subject line, like - in this case - "fan not working".

Michelle, Which Fan On The Back?
Jun 27, 2007 2:24PM PDT

Is the fan that's not working part of the power supply? (Usually at the top of the computer tower.)

Or is it lower down, maybe in the middle of the tower?

If the power supply fan isn't running, then you'll probably want to get a new power supply.

If it's just a fan which pushes air through the tower, you have options.. A competent repair shop is a good option as Kees mentioned above and as he stated, you should take care of the problem quickly. Then again, you might even consider doing it yourself.. You'll need to open the tower and see the type of fan, check it's size and view the location where the power wires are plugged in.. If you've got a computer supply store nearby, they're not too expensive and aren't hard to replace.. It's up to you.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Grif and Kees. The problem was the fan in the power supply. We got a new power supply and my father and brother hooked it up and now everything is good.

I'm sorry I couldn't answer you right away. I haven't been online much and I wasn't running the computer when it was messed up. I don't know how long it was messed up, but the guy where that we got the power supply said that he was surprised nothing else was damaged..

We got a 400 watt power supply for about $30. There was only a 300 watt power supply in it, which at Staples we were told we couldn't do this. That we had to stick with a 300, but they had no 300 watt, only 350s and they told us we couldn't do that, that we had to use a 300 watt. So we went somewhere else and they said we could upgrade the power supply and it wouldn't cause a problem so that's what we did.

Everything is running fine now, thank you for your help.

Thank you.
