Quest? to Kodak EasyShare printer dock users

May 23, 2005 1:16PM PDT

I am helping a neighbor with her new Kodak LS753 and the printer dock. I don't print my own photos (cheaper for me to upload) so I'm unfamiliar with the dock. Looked like it should have been easy. Finally got her EasyShare software loaded and running (disk did not work on her XP). All is well. However, didn't hook up the dock to the computer yet.
I explained to her that the printer dock will work even without a computer. To show her how, we set up the dock and plugged it in. All of the dock lights came on and stayed on for about 10 seconds and then all went out. Pressing any of the buttons on the unit failed to lighting them. Placing the camera on the dock also did nothing. No response. This happens each time it is plugged in. Tried other wall plugs and same each time. Sure doesn't look right to me, and the lousy technical manual doesn't say anything about it.
Now getting to my question... What happens when you plug in YOUR dock? Are we doing something wrong?
THANKS for your help. Will probably try Kodak's customer service tomorrow too.

Sounds dead to me.

I can only share what I experienced at the trade show. You plop the camera in and use the little joystick to show the picture you want to print and then press print button. Didn't seem too hard, but I do not own one.

I figured it out!

Just an update for anyone having the same problem. It turns out that the ''custom insert'' that was listed in the EasyShare printer dock User's Guide SHOULD NOT be used on the printer dock. It is a clear plastic plate that fits on the top of the dock. The Guide says ''...you must use the custom camera insert to dock the camera, otherwise the camera will not fit on the printer dock'' but this is wrong. The dock initially comes with a ''universal'' insert that was supposed to be removed.

I tried it without the dock and it worked fine. The camera, however, was a little hard to line-up to the dock so I called customer service anyway to verify. The customer service rep seemed puzzled, then put me on hold. After consulting with someone else he said that the insert was no longer needed on the dock for the LS753 camera. Never mind that the dock and camera AND the printed documentation were all bundled in the same package bought at Costco.

So now it isn't that easy to dock. It's a bit hard to line up the camera and the dock, but works fine once it is actually docked. I still think that there should be an insert or something to make it easier to line up, but that's the answer that I got.

NOTE: The dock is supposed to light up when plugged in and then go dead. It awakens when the camera is properly docked. The camera should be OFF when docking.

Well...it turns out that my instincts were right. There IS a custom insert for this camera/dock, and the neighbor didn't unpack it.
Customer service was wrong and the User Guide was correct.
The camera now docks very easily.
Geez. It's the really dumb things that can take up all of your time.
