Query regarding Samsung 46' 550

Feb 23, 2009 10:49AM PST

I recently purchased a Samsung 46" Series 5 as I liked the quality of the image when I saw it in the retail store (it was also marked down otherwise I would have gone the 40").

While I new it wasn't top of the range, I am not overly impressed with the picture when characters move on relatively static background.
For example, when watching Spiderman 3, the characters appear enhanced over the background image almost like a 3D image. This became painfully obvious with sequences with special effects (i.e. Dr Oc arms).

This only appears to be a problem with HD images (a lot of the American shows CSI, Criminal Minds Dexter etc) but sport appear fine.

Is there anyway I can reduce this contrast?

This is both through standard DVD as well as HDTV for commercial station programming.

corveeme,

I'm not sure why the signal would show a superimposed foreground (character) over a static background with a 3D-effect like that. CGI movies do have the tendency to display some of those characteristics in some instances, but it shouldn't be so apparent that it becomes bothersome.

The fact that this happens on both SD and HD programming is curious, so I'm going to try a few more follow up questions. More curious is that most people experience this issue WITH sports and not so much with other viewing choices.

1. For your DVD - is it standad (progressive scan) or upconverting to a higher resolution?

2. For the HD, is there any more detail you can give on the moving vs. static pictures?

I might suggest trying to change some of the Entertainment modes on page 59 of the manual to see if any of those options give you a better result.

Keep me posted!

I turned off most of the auto functions (movie plus, dynamic contrast etc).

I don't know exactly which feature it was that changed the image (as I turned off everything), but the image looks fantastic now.

I am now very happy with my tv. Thanks for the help.

Here at TVS TELEVISIONS Online we love to see how quickly Samsung responds to user questions to ensure that consumers that have purchased their product are satisfied. I am glad to see that your were able to clear things up.

Being a retired electronics/computer repair guy-we always worked to isolate the fault. Now that you know what actions you took to make it work correctly but do not know which action was responsible, you might consider going back and turning on the disable functions one at a time to identify the one or more that actually caused the problem--leaving disabled but re-enabling the others so that you can benefit from their features.
