Query Re: Constant Windows Updates??

Sep 4, 2010 8:40AM PDT

I have a new Windows 7 PC - 2 weeks old - an HP p6520f. Every night when I shut it down I get a message not to unplug the PC because it is downloading five (5) updates. It is hard to believe that Microsoft has five updates to windows 7 every day. Is this an indication of a problem of some sort?

I would appreciate any advice.

Tony

The fix varies with the update KBnnnnnn. If you have the KB number we can begin the discussion.

Windows 7 Update Failures

There were 5 updates that have repeatedly failed to install:

2007 MS Office 2007 Service Pack 2(SP2)
KB967642
KB2279264
KB951944
KB951550

Many thanks for your interest.

More info is needed about your Office version. If it is that Enterprise version your IT staff gets to deal with it as it can be locked down.

If it's the Trial, just set WU to ignore these as the Trial locks down and I've seen these fail. MS seems to have issues with that.

But if it's the real RETAIL version then google EACH KBnnnnnn (notice that each has 6 numbers and here's an example.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E93AB1BE-ADE6-4FF8-8637-DBD3EBE3C5C5&displaylang=sl&displaylang=en

Scroll down to the "IT professional resources
IT professionals working in managed environments can find complete resources for deploying Office updates in an organization on the Office System Suites and Programs TechCenter.

The downloads for this update is available by clicking on the Download button at the top of the page. You can double-click the executable package to begin installation, or extract the patch files (MSP files) by using a command line. The command line and instructions are included in the Knowledge Base article Command line switches for Microsoft Self-Extractor packages (KB912203)."

This will allow you to manually install each update.

Bob,

Many thanks for your advice which would perfectly for KB967642. However, the other four (4) updates still will fail to install. I have MS Office Enterprise 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.6535.5002)- if that means anything. I downloaded this version from the MS WWW as part of a deal between my employer and Microsoft which allows employees to obtain a full version of MS Office for $10 for home use. The four updates are labeled important. Any other ideas on how to install these updates would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Good for you.

Since you have Enterprise you have a support agreement in place. I know that Enterprise differs and you must deal with your support staff to have them tell you what they did.
