QuarkXPress crashes because of linked items on master pages?

Nov 14, 2005 6:34AM PST

The error is confusing; it goes something like:

"Cannot link across master page items" and brings me from my page, to the master page and keeps coming up with this same warning each time I try to UNDO, or when I try to go back to my body page, it wont let me because of some crossed link?

This is very confusing to describe, but HOPEFULLY someone else has had this exact problem and LUCKILY they have been able to fix this problem because when I FORCE QUIT or either REVERT TO LAST SAVED (this has happend to me twice now UUUGGGHH!!) it CRASHES Quark and the file is unreadable. I'm thinking of because this linking problem, it makes Quark crash.

Please HELP if you can, or possibly send me to a ALL KNOWING QUARK GURU!

Simon, sorry to miss your post until now. Seems we both have the years into Quark Xpress. Right now I am using V6.5. Very good.
Cannot wait for version 7.
Brand new interface to a degree. Want to compare notes?
Go to quark.com and download a beta trial version to try out.
If you are on our CNET profiles, I will email you this info also.

solution

I know this is an old post but I'm posting my solution from a person who is still using Quark 6.1
Your changes might be lost. I luckily had a back up file to play around with. I opened a copy of my backup file, went straight to the MasterPage (I think it was a facing pages master page with dog ears in both corners). I made a new masterpage and deleted the one that was already there. My new masterpage b took over and the files seems to be saving and working correctly I just need to set up my auto page numbering again which was the main use of my masterpage.

RE: Quark "cannot link text boxes across master pages" Error
Jun 3, 2008 1:02AM PDT

Here is the EASIEST solution, which we found by trial and error. And which I have just recently used in the past week about 3 times.

(1) After you are shunted back to the master page, do an Apple-Zero to "fit in window." (This just makes it easier to see everything.)

(2) In your Tools palette, select the De-Link Tool. You may see a dizzying array of links! Don't panic.

(3) Click on the Link icon in the upper left corner of the master page you are looking at. (For me, it has been the right-hand page, as every document we produce has facing pages.) It should now be "de-linked."

(4) Scroll over (for me, left) to the other page & "de-link" that one, too.

(5) Save.

You should be fine. This was all done in my CURRENT file, NOT a "back-up." Everything works fine afterward.
