QT crashed my Mac!

Aug 12, 2007 3:06PM PDT

Okay, I think that everyone knows that the QT 7.2 update is screwed.

Real screwed.

I believe that many people also know that the update also inteferes and causes problems with the Rosetta and CFM applications.

For me, Safari was the only app affected by the glitch. Rosetta could not operate correctly when it was used. Natural mode was the only way to get Safari to function properly.

Well, this became nuiscance to me, so I used Pacifist to reinstall QT 7.1.6 to fix the problem. But when I tried to load the newly restored QT, the app wouldn't load. I thought that this was odd, so I tried reinstalling it from the receipt, which said it worked. Didn't. Made it WORSE!

I restarted my Mac like I needed to. When it finished loading, the top-right icons on the Finder were completely gone, save the Spotlight icon which was flashing on and off. The icons couldn't be accessed even if you clicked on their original locations. All my apps crashed when I tried to load. Nothing would run except the Finder, which had problems itself.

The only way to fix it? I had to backup all of my data to my external hard drive again, and reinstall the system. I archived and installed because of applications that I had on it though. I'm now running OS X 10.4.8 and QT 7.1.3 and my Mac has never worked better!

There are numerous updates that my Mac would like me to install, but after this QT escapade, I'm waiting for Leopard. My Mac is now like it was when I bought it, and performance is back to the top.

My system crashed due to both the faulty QT software and myself. But I removed all the QT 7.2 components before running an older version of QT on the system. It SHOULD HAVE worked, but instead my whole system broke down and I had to reinstall. But, at least everything works, and I didn't lose any important data, so I'm happy.

Software Update is now my enemy. I'm not messing with it until Leopard or until Apple decided to help us out. Hopefully, readers will try to stay away from QT trouble because I had to spend my whole day fixing the mess it created. I turned a small problem into a much bigger one.

I hope you guys don't make the same mistake I did. Feel free to post any comments on your own adventures with the QT 7.2 problems.

QuickTime
Aug 12, 2007 10:48PM PDT

Oh Wow!
QuickTime is screwed? Do I have to do all that stuff you said to make it work?

Has something bad happened to my computer? It does not seem to be messed up.

I have do all the updates in the software update thing and I have the latest Quicktime and I have 10.4.10 on my iMac.

How can I stop my computer from being messed up by that QuickTime update?

I'm very worried now, I don't know a lot and I never mess around in places I shouldn't.

hmmm... interesting...

I am running OSX 10.4.10 and QuickTime 7.2 and it gets a pretty good workout with all the video and audio work (playing and editing) I do... and everything is running great. Along with Safari and iMovie and FinalCut Pro and iTunes and all...

I guess if I had QuickTime problems, I'd post those issues - but I don't...

I don't think you understand...

The QT update only affects applications that work with ROSETTA.

Rosetta is a software package that allows Intel Macs to run PPC apps and other stuff better. It affected my Safari browser when I turned Rosetta on, but you couldn't see any problem with it when it was off.

I can't say that everyone was affected though. Others have had it worse. Some people couldn't even access their Rosetta apps.

I'm just saying that Rosetta was affected by this update for some people. Other users have been able to use the update with no problems. I had a smaller problem than that of others, but when I tried to fix it the right way, QT crashed my system, and I had to reinstall Mac OS X. If your Macs are running fine, and you know that you're running Rosetta for some apps, you may not have been affected.

For me, I could have lost a lot if it had been worse. I'm just saying that for those like me who have experienced problems, don't try to fix it. Apple has to release a patch sometime, though who knows when. Me, I'm waiting for Leopard before I decide to start upgrading my Mac.

I'm happier now that my Mac is running right. For everyone else, be careful, even if you don't have any problems. The latest and greatest software updates may not always be the "greatest".

Hope this helps readers.
