Your basic IT staff should have answered with the usual tools and talked about NTFS and more. When I see questions like this I wonder what happened.

But I'd like to know why your IT didn't know how to do this or research it.

I have a 879U Qnap. Is there a way to transfer user and permissions settings from an AD server to the Qnap without losing the permissions. Is there a way to make fail over clustering, if my Qnap goes down is there a way to point it to a different Qnap in a different location?
