Puzzled!? 'Safari 4 Windows' update is lower 5.1.7

by edgbaston / May 12, 2012 7:02 AM PDT

Is something amiss here?

Have gotten use to updated software having a higher number than previous versions. This latest Apple update as advised on CNET Techtracker and Apple Software Update is for a lower number.

i have been using version since advised to update on 12th March 2012 by either Apple Software Update or CNET Techtracker. Now i am being told the new update is version, 5.1.7.

Please advise?

Can I suggest
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / May 12, 2012 8:28 PM PDT

that you re-post this in CNET TechTracker's dedicated forum here?

In the meantime I wouldn't try and 'update' your Safari as I agree, it sounds very strange.

Has there been any changes on your system recently, a new computer, or a reinstall of the operating system? If so it may mean that TechTracker's details of your system is out of date and you need to let it re-scan your system, but don't follow my advice as I don't know much about TechTracker and I might be telling you wrong.

Instead, give as much information as you can in your new post.

Good luck.

Waste of time.

i followed your advice and duly posted my question in the 'TechTracker' forum. No reply was immediately forthcoming and i had come to the opinion that it wasn't really a 'TechTracker' issue as the result was duplicated by 'Apple Software Update' and, maybe, therefore more appropriate here.

However, i now know the answer to my own problem and am sorry for wasting everyone's time.

My question arose because my Windows, 'Programs and Features' and 'Revo Uninstaller' give my current Safari (for Windows) version as, ''. What this bear of very little brain had failed to check was the browser's very own, 'About Safari'. This i did last night after accidentally opening the browser, though what prompted me to do so when i had intended to just , 'File, Exit', i now do not remember. There was the answer to my update conundrum: 'Safari 5.1.5 (7534.55.3). How Windows, 'Programs and Features' and 'Revo Uninstaller' interpret that to 'Safari' is a whole other can of worms that is best left to my friend 'Owl'.

Thank you for your reply and time.

You may now mark the issue as closed.

Cheers, ben

Good find

and not entirely a waste of time. At least you now know how to find the versions of your applications. Happy

I can't explain why the Safari version is shown as in Windows' own Programs & Features and by Revo but I'm sure you saw the similarity in the numbers.

Revo and P&F version
Actual version - 5.1.5 (7534.55.3)

If you do update Safari now, (or if you already have done), it will be interesting to know if Help > About now shows 5.1.7 (7534.55.3), or some other number.

But it doesn't explain anything of course and I think we put this down to one of Windows' little mysteries.

I see you have also posted in the TechTracker forum so thank you for that.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
