Putting study books from Mac to iPod

I want to move some study books from my Macbook to my new iPod 8GB. Can I do this by syncing iTunes on my iPod to those files on the laptop? Would this, in essence, be like downloading the books to the iPod?
Or, can I take the CD's the books came on and load them onto the iPod? I would sure make studying a whole lot easier. Any sites that discuss this in depth would be appreciated.
