Putting items in Startup folder in Windows XP

Feb 15, 2004 7:07AM PST

Just swtiched to Windows XP. How do I put items in the Startup folder? And how do I get these programs to start up minimized on my toolbar?

Thanks for your help.

Go to your taskbar settings by right clicking on the bottom bar on your desktop. You can change what you want to use in the start up method you wish to implement and customize it.

Check out a freeware application called StartupCPL at http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml. This places a Startup icon in your Control Panel which, when opened, lists all applications on your PC with a check box for each one. Simply put a check mark in each application you want to open minimized on startup. By the way, it states it is for Windows ME and 2000, but I have had it on XP for quite a while and it works fine.

I downloaded the sofware but I don't see that it lists all my applications that I want to put in the startup folder and startup minimized. Perhaps I'm missing something.

To minimize the program once you get the shortcut in the StartUp folder, right-click on the shortcut. Choose minimized in the Run field on the property form and save the change.

When you put items to the startup folder, the programs will run when you boot up, with the program icons at the 'sysytem tray' near the clock. Is that what you want ? Or do you mean to put items to the start menu ? Or do you mean to put items to the 'quick launch bar', which is at the task bar ? Or do you want to put program icons at the task bar, in which case your are 'multi tasking' and waiting to run the programs which are 'minimised' ? Anyway:

The 'start memu' folder is at 'Documents & Settings' >User account folder>Start menu. Within the start menu folder, is the 'Programs' folder and within that is the 'start' folder. All items at the start menu are shortcuts, so create shortcuts to the programs and move the shortcut to where you want it to be. Note that the program folder mentioned is not the Program folder in which you install programs.

Yes, that's what I want to do.

If that is what you want to do, then wheb you are running a program, just minimize it by clicking the
"-" at the top right corner. That program will be minimized at the task bar. You then open up another program, then minimized it the same way, and so on. If you want to go back to a previous program, click at its icon at the task bar, and it will be 'restored'. Multitasking this way, you can change between programs to exchange information. I often write reports using MS Word, and often have to go into the internet to search for information and then paste these information unto the document I am working on. Working this way, I do not have to close and reopen programs. However, putting programs on the taskbar this way is for one session only. If this is not what you want, please post back, telling what you want to do (the objective). I would suspect that you want a 'quick launch bar' which you did not choose as a choice from my previous post, so that you can launch a program without bringing up the start menu ?
