Putin honors Arafat's memory

Apr 29, 2005 1:13PM PDT

RAMALLAH, West Bank, April 29 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin laid a wreath next to Yasser Arafat's tomb Friday, Interfax news agency reported.

Putin made the gesture during his visit to the Palestinian Authority territories and to Israel, the first ever by a sitting Russian head of state.

Accompanied by Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, the current president of the Palestinian Authority, Putin entered Arafat's mausoleum and observed a minute of silence to pay tribute to the former Palestinian leader's memory. Arafat's temporary mausoleum is located on the grounds of the Mukata Palestinian government compound.

The Soviet Union was a strong supporter of Arafat and his Palestine Liberation Organization until the collapse of communism.
