Puter doesnt 'know' my modem

by Dragon / May 2, 2004 9:12 AM PDT

Ive just completed a run of my recovery disk for Win 98. It doesnt know what my modem is, other than the fact that it is a modem. It asks me to find a driver for it, but the modem my maching labels it is "PCI Modem Enumerator". How do I get my modem running under the proper name and softeware? I have a CD with the software for it, but it doesnt know how set it up by itself.

1. Error 162 means you run the computer's setup and save the settings.

2. 98 doesn't know modems. And from your description, I can't offer a driver.

Make and model and then we go get the driver.

I have the driver. I have a Conexant modem, not sure about further details--I can open the case and take a look if I need to.

Why doesnt the computer see the cotton pickin modem?

And what is the computers setup? I followed all directions given to me, except for doing the registration -- and that doesnt count.

Try again to uninstall and reinstall the modem: From memory, the following are the basic steps:

? Remove-uninstall the modem at Control Panel> Device Manager, preferably in safe mode.

? Shutdown computer.

? Reboot (from your post, yours is an internal modem--if external, plug in and turn on before rebooting).

? Hopefully, Windows will detect your modem, in which case follow on screen instructions.

? If modem is not detected, then install manually:

? At Control Panel>Modems-or at Add Hardware. click at Add....

? Follow on screen instructions.

But-have you done that already and still have problems ?

Thanks! I had tried those steps previously, to no avail. But then I stuck the Win98 update CD in. After that process was completed, everything fell into place! Im sending this reply with my own puter.

I was getting a little frustrated, but Im a happy camper, now. Ive already downloaded the service pack from Microsoft. Ill take care of the 13 critical updates, tomorrow, and see about other things I need to do, like getting protection.

Thanks, everybody.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
